North Lincolnshire Tourist Hotspot Commissions AlphaX Industrial Service

North Lincolnshire Tourist Hotspot Commissions AlphaX Industrial Service

AlphaX Industrial Service recently partnered with local engineering company, John Dunn Engineering to carry out routine NDT inspection maintenance checks on one of Scunthorpe Steelworks very own, resident steam locomotives.

Based on site, the Appleby Frodingham Railway Preservation Society (AFRPS), has its own collection of steam and diesel locomotives, a locomotive shed and station with buffet facilities, whereby afternoon tours are available to members of the public and enthusiasts keen to learn more about the Steel works & railway heritage.

The railway site, based at Scunthorpe’s Steel Works, sees a thoroughfare of visitors to the AFRPS track each year. Trading with Covid safety measures in place the site is looking forward to welcome visitors, following the recent lockdown and as Tier restrictions ease.

John Dunn, comments, “It’s been great to work with NDT specialist, AlphaX Industrial Service who have not only provided thorough NDT testing, covering visual inspection and Magnetic Particle Inspection as part of our steam locomotive maintenance checks but have also provided a flexible service amidst the changing covid guidelines; ensuring that checks could continue whilst adhering to all covid safety measures.”

The Iron and Steel Industry in Scunthorpe was established in the mid 19th century, following the discovery and exploitation of middle Lias ironstone east of Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. Initially iron ore was exported to iron producers in South Yorkshire. With it’s impressive 100 mile track, used as part of the steel making process, it’s an incredible hot spot for train enthusiasts and visitors keen to understand more about the heritage of Steel industry in south Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire.

What is EN1090?

EN 1090 applies to structural components. It is against the law to supply structural metalwork that fails to conform to EN 1090. Here’s a brief overview to help you understand the requirements.

EN 1090 is broken down into  three sections:
EN 1090-1: Requirements for conformity assessment for structural components
EN 1090-2: Technical requirements for the execution of steel structures
EN 1090-3: Technical requirements for the execution of aluminium structure

Section 1 calls for CE Marking, which demonstrates compliance with the appropriate manufacturing standard for a product.

Section 2 and 3 states that welders have been tested against an approved weld procedure before being able to weld structural products.

Where welding is part of the process, a welding quality management system is needed that conforms to EN ISO 3834 ‘Quality Requirements for Fusion Welding of Metallic Materials’
Any company should employ, or have access to a responsible welding co-ordinator (RWC) to control its welding quality management system.

Alpha X Industrial Service can guide you through the requirements of EN 1090 ready for certification by an external notified body.

Railway Gem Plays Pivotal Role in Staying Loyal to Local whilst Keeping the Age of Steam Alive

Railway Gem Plays Pivotal Role in Staying Loyal to Local whilst Keeping the Age of Steam Alive

Staying loyal to local, popular Lincolnshire Wolds Railway, (situated in a beautiful part of Lincolnshire in countryside and close to popular Cleethorpes coast), receives its inspection check this week by Lincolnshire based NDT Inspection company, AlphaX Industrial Services, ahead of the Winter shutdown.

James Wilson, Engineering Director for Lincolnshire Wolds Railway comments, “It’s been challenging for us at LWR during these unprecedented times but we are delighted to have been operating and continuing our services into October, before the Winter shutdown season.”

“Safety is paramount to our day to day running of the steam trains and we are working to support local businesses close to the site, where-ever possible to drive community relations and support the local economy. We are really grateful to all our volunteers that are continuing to support with the running of LWR during these difficult times and hope to see an extension to our 2020 timetable from the end of October, continuing into a prosperous year ahead for events and experiences that we will be running, with COVID 19 safety measures.”

Managing Director, Alpha X Industrial Service comments, “Alpha X Industrial Service specialises in NDT/ Welding Inspection for businesses across Lincolnshire and the Humber region. It’s a great honour to work on inspection checks for such a local heritage site, it’s a great amenity to the local and surrounding communities and we hope the public continue to support its efforts through these uncertain times.”

After the last section of line was closed by BR in 1980, a preservation society was formed with the aim of restoring it. Heritage steam trains once again run between Ludborough and North Thoresby and work is now in progress to extend the line southwards towards Louth.

The team are actively recruiting volunteers to help run the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway – the running, restoration and maintenance of the railway are all carried out by volunteers at the LWR. They are the lifeblood of the organisation and asking anyone interested to get in touch via their website.

What’s The Difference Between Quality Control & Inspection

What’s The Difference Between Quality Control & Inspection

Inspection is the application of methods of examination to ensure that quality is controlled to an acceptable level.

The following are typical requirements for the quality of weld products.

  • The product is finished accurately in accordance with the design dimensions.
  • The product offers the required functionality and strength and safety required
  • The appearance of the weld satisfies the required level.

The basic conditions of welding quality to achieve products of such high quality includes the following:

-No cracks or holes found in the bead

-The bead has uniform waves, width and height

-The finished product satisfies the design dimensions and has almost no distortion.

-The welding meets the required strength

Full penetration welds that fuse and join the entire interface between the base materials or a weld joints including partial penetration welds should be used appropriately to ensure the necessary rigidity.

What is Welding Inspection?

What is Welding Inspection?

Welding inspection typically consists of a series of quality control checks carried out by welding inspectors. It ensures welded joints meet required levels of quality and are fit for purpose.

A range of welding inspection techniques may be applied, depending on factors such as joint configuration, specific defects of interest, material type/thickness and whether in shop or on site.

At AlphaX industrial Services, we provide the following NDT services:

New legislation for steelwork in building construction

New legislation for steelwork in building construction

Recent Health & Safety regulations issued by the BCSA  now outline the mandatory requirements for all steelworker contractors to put in place a third party certified welding quality management system to BS EN ISO 3834 by January 2021.

The National Structural Steelwork Specification for Building Construction (NSSS) is a specification that includes checklists and information that need to be considered and carried out by design.  The principal topics in the NSSS that need to be considered and reviewed are:

  • Information required by the steelworker contractor
  • Material
  • Information provided by the Steelworker contractor
  • Workmanship
  • Welding
  • Bolting
  • Fabrication accuracy
  • Erection
  • Erection accuracy
  • Protective treatment
  • Quality management

The enforcement is following the tragic Grenfell Tower fire and the call for the industry not to wait for legislation and instead take ownership of the specification, application and inspection of intumescent paint systems.

For any fabrication companies looking for support and expertise to ensure risk assessments are in place – we are here to help.

We are on board to help ensure certified welding quality management programmes are in place.

What are the benefits of working with a smaller NDT and Weld Inspection business?

What are the benefits of working with a smaller NDT and Weld Inspection business?

We often get asked that exact question, when local fabrication companies approach us for further insight into the services that we provide at AlphaX Industrial Service, and it’s always a response we enjoy discussing. We work collaboratively with experts across the UK, day in, day out which enables us as a company to have the diverse knowledge, expertise and flexible customer support that we offer.

Personalised service – A smaller work environment, and indeed workforce means that staff are more likely to be familiar with staff, allowing for more effective communication between the business and supplier. Your business will work with the same person and build a strong business & supplier relationship.

Flexibility – Should the business needs change within the contract, the people working on the job won’t – as we pride ourselves in being a one stop shop to be able to deliver work within the remit we specialise in

Overheads – Lower overheads is something to really consider within current climate, it’s an opportunity to capitalise on cost savings without jeopardising service.

Continuity – It’s the same faces you will see, the same people handing over the jobs and whether your staff change, we won’t. The same faces carrying out the risk assessments, reporting, customer liaison and delivering the services on your business site. Alpha X is a small business, based in Grimsby providing services across North East Lincolnshire, Humber and Yorkshire –  and would love to hear from companies seeking support across the NDT inspection, CE Marking, ISO Internal Auditing and Health and Safety Consultancy.

COVID 19 Health and Safety Risk Assessments within the work place

COVID 19 Health and Safety Risk Assessments within the work place

Operating throughout the COVID- 19 pandemic, and further to Government guidance and CHAS accreditation – AlphaX Industrial Service continues to ensure that necessary safety measures are in place to reduce the virus transmission across the
workplace, helping to keep employees safe and ensure businesses continue to serve customers.

We understand the implications and the difficulties that businesses have faced throughout COVID 19 and we are collaboratively working with businesses across Lincolnshire and Yorkshire – who are in search of COVID 19 risk assessment support.

Three main types of control measures that can be implemented and implemented within the risk assessments:

  • Engineering Control Measures: These are the most effective coronavirus control measures. They involve making physical changes to the workplace to place a barrier between the person and the hazard. Engineering controls may include physical barriers such as screens between people.
  • Administrative Control Measures: This type of action involves keeping the workplace and equipment clean, adjusting workplace tasks and activities, and potentially redesigning the workplace to make it safer. Administrative controls can include social distancing training, distance markings, signage and increased hygiene practices. You may also decide to limit the number of employees returning to work, or the number of customers or visitors permitted on-site at any one time.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: PPE such as gloves, masks and respirators is the least effective form of coronavirus risk mitigation so it should be a last resort. For PPE to be necessary, workers will still be coming into contact with transmission risks. Personal protective equipment is also only effective if workers use it correctly.
