Any company involved in construction will be familiar with EN 1090, a standard that regulates steel and aluminium structures. This standard has been a legal requirement in the UK since July 2014.

EN 1090 applies to structural components. It is against the law to supply structural metalwork that fails to conform to EN 1090. Here’s a brief overview to help you understand the requirements:

EN 1090 is broken down into  three sections:
EN 1090-1: Requirements for conformity assessment for structural components
EN 1090-2: Technical requirements for the execution of steel structures
EN 1090-3: Technical requirements for the execution of aluminium structure 

Section 1 calls for CE Marking, which demonstrates compliance with the appropriate manufacturing standard for a product.

Section 2 and 3 states that welders have been tested against an approved weld procedure before being able to weld structural products.

Where welding is part of the process, a welding quality management system is needed that conforms to EN ISO 3834 ‘Quality Requirements for Fusion Welding of Metallic Materials’
Any company should employ, or have access to a responsible welding co-ordinator (RWC) to control its welding quality management system.
