AlphaX Industrial Service recently partnered with local engineering company, John Dunn Engineering to carry out routine NDT inspection maintenance checks on one of Scunthorpe Steelworks very own, resident steam locomotives.

Based on site, the Appleby Frodingham Railway Preservation Society (AFRPS), has its own collection of steam and diesel locomotives, a locomotive shed and station with buffet facilities, whereby afternoon tours are available to members of the public and enthusiasts keen to learn more about the Steel works & railway heritage.

The railway site, based at Scunthorpe’s Steel Works, sees a thoroughfare of visitors to the AFRPS track each year. Trading with Covid safety measures in place the site is looking forward to welcome visitors, following the recent lockdown and as Tier restrictions ease.

John Dunn, comments, “It’s been great to work with NDT specialist, AlphaX Industrial Service who have not only provided thorough NDT testing, covering visual inspection and Magnetic Particle Inspection as part of our steam locomotive maintenance checks but have also provided a flexible service amidst the changing covid guidelines; ensuring that checks could continue whilst adhering to all covid safety measures.”

The Iron and Steel Industry in Scunthorpe was established in the mid 19th century, following the discovery and exploitation of middle Lias ironstone east of Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. Initially iron ore was exported to iron producers in South Yorkshire. With it’s impressive 100 mile track, used as part of the steel making process, it’s an incredible hot spot for train enthusiasts and visitors keen to understand more about the heritage of Steel industry in south Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire.
