What Is API-510?
If you have pressure vessel on your site then you need to comply with the pressure system safety regulations (PSSR), set out by the UK health and safety executive (HSE) that came into law in the year 2000.
To comply with these regulations, you will need regular vessel inspections at defined intervals as detailed in a written scheme of examination. One requirement also stipulated by the PSSR’s is that the vessel inspections are carried out by a competent individual.
This is where API-510 comes in as it’s a recognized code for pressure vessel inspection and inspectors are formally assessed and certified to these requirements. It’s an excellent way for a pressure vessel operator to demonstrate to the health and safety executive that the inspector is competent if carrying the API-510 qualifications
Published in 1958 by the American petroleum institute, API-510 has evolved over the years into what it is today, along with several supporting codes, covering all the inspection requirements from Ndt to risk based inspection (RBI) methods.

White Metal Bearing NDT
AlphaX Industrial services supports a variety of businesses – from fabrication companies to large CCGT (combined cycle gas turbine) power stations.
Most recently we have been supporting a Power Station project with NDT Inspection – working to provide Dye-Penetrant and Ultrasonic testing, assessing the bonding and surface of white metal bearings. The white metal surface of a bearing is low friction which is bonded to a stronger steel or bronze shell to provide the structural support of the bearing. If this bonding or the low friction surface has flaws it could lead to a premature and possible catastrophic failure of the bearing and other components.
Working collaboratively, AlphaX Industrial Service worked with our customer to provide Dye penetrant examination on white metal surface of the bearings applying red searching fluid which is applied and left for 20 minutes before excess dye is wiped from the surface. This method indicates cracks and provides a reliable testing method for complex shapes, revealing the shape and depth any defects in the surface. We also carried out ultrasonic testing of the material to asses for flaws in the bonding between the white metal and the structural component of the bearing.

Nozzles & Nodes Training – Rotherham
It’s been a busy few weeks for us at Alpha X Industrial Services, from client jobs to updating our own accreditation and training. We recently attended Lavender International, global brand for non-destructive testing (NDT) – extending our current accreditation to extend our practical ultrasonic testing knowledge in the welds category, to include Nozzles (3.8) and Nodes (3.9).
In gaining qualifications in Nozzle (3.8) certification we are now certified to test “T” Welds “3.7”
Safety is paramount for us at Alpha X Industrial Service, we perform our work according to Ultrasonic Testing Procedures, supporting our customers throughout the process and providing knowledge based solutions.
Here’s our step by step process of how we can support with NDT inspection and training:
- We select the Ultrasonic technique for the test method to be use
- Define the limitations of application of the testing method
- Translate NDT codes, standards, specifications and procedures into NDT instructions adapted to the actual working conditions;
- Set up and verify equipment settings
- Perform and supervise tests
- Interpret and evaluate results according to applicable standards, codes, specifications or procedures
If you’re in need of a quote or would like to discuss NDT training further – we’d be happy to help.
